Più luce II

The name of my exhibition (“Più luce – will light prevail”) refers to Goethe’s alleged last words, “Mehr Licht.” In addition to concrete light, it can be interpreted more broadly as a plea for tolerance, reason and hope in our turbulent times. In my paintings, I examine the significance of a garden as a symbol of hope in different cultures.

As a special frame of reference for these paintings, I have used Spain’s Moorish garden architecture and Italian Renaissance gardens, which gave birth to the groundbreaking concept of a complete artwork, the joint impact of the built environment and wild nature. Residency work in old Moorish areas and Tuscany provided a foundation for my paintings. For this reason, the name of the exhibition is in Italian.

The exhibition features both acrylic paintings on paper rising to ceiling height and smaller watercolors. In the acrylic paintings, my distinctive style is created by several layers of acrylic paint on very thin paper, causing the paper almost to blend into the paint. As a result, the surface resembles an organic web, as if the veins of a leaf. The watercolors are pastiches of scenes from the Italian Renaissance and Spain’s Moorish period.
